The Forgotten BMW - The E31 850CI

The E31 8 series was a grand tourer built by BMW between 1989 and 1999. BMW have recently rekindled the 8 series flame and the new ones are absolutely stunning, but we are here to talk about the old one so no more on that! All E31 8 series have pop up headlights so that's an instant plus for me. Of all of the 8 Series, the one you will want to know about is the 850ci, because it has the biggest engine of course.

What a lovely grainy image. Judging by this picture the 850ci could be a replacement for Knight Rider don't you think? Maybe fans will start converting them (I advise against it though).

BMW have an interesting naming system, in fact its not interesting its just simple. We will do a very easy breakdown - if we take the 850ci for example, the "8" is obviously for 8 series, the "50" is because it has a 5.0L engine, the "c" is for coupe and the "i" is for injection, meaning its petrol.

850ci spec:

V12 engine

5.0L

V12

300bhp @ 5200 rpm

0-60 in 6.8 seconds

450Nm of torque

13mpg combined (not great then)

Apparently its top speed is 155mph, it must be restricted because that does not seem possible with a V12, unless BMW hired the worst tuners available to design the engine map of the car.

£10K-20K

If you can, get the AC Schnitzer, they look even better. I do think people are due to start appreciating it, and since the new 8 series has been released it will be even more on people's radar's.
